Door Panel Removal

car maintenance and repairIf you need to replace a door window or motor, repair door damage, or fix a door handle or lock, you may need to remove a door panel – the interior covering of a car’s door. Behind it lies the mechanism for raising and lowering windows and unlatching the door so it can be opened. Because there are so many types of cars, I can give you only general tips that will help you remove most doors, including trunk trim. Here they are:

  • Door trim is designed to be installed quickly in a factory, so most fasteners will be simple and easy to reach.

  • Many door panels are fastened at the top of the door below the window with easily removed screws.

  • Some door panels are held in place with a clip that lines up with and is pressed into a hole in the door, especially around the lower edges of the door; get a panel removal tool from your auto parts store.

  • Window cranks (called regulator handles) can be removed with a special tool (available at larger auto parts stores) that removes and installs a clip wire located behind the handle itself.

  • Many cars require that you unscrew the door latch button before removing the door trim.

  • Recessed door handle compartments typically have a screw cover that can be removed with a small flat screwdriver or special tool to access the screw head.
