Page 1 of 2 Sometimes the best way to repair an interior is to remove and disassemble or replace a car seat. How is that done? Of course, exact instructions depend on whether you car has bucket or bench seats and how the manufacturer designed them to be removed. Fortunately, most seats are removed and reinstalled in about the same manner.
Tech Tip
Seat belts and other safety restraints can become twisted in their mechanisms, making them difficult to retract or withdraw. If necessary, remove the protective cover on the belt’s retracting mechanism and rethread. Also, carefully add a drop or two of light (5-weight) oil every year or two to keep the mechanism working smoothly. While you’re at it, add a couple of drops to the belt latches.
To remove bucket-style seats. . .
-
Slide the seat forward on its track and remove the bolts that attach the track to the car’s floor.
-
Slide the seat rearward and remove the attaching bolts.
-
Lift the seat to access and disconnect the seat electrical connectors.
-
Carefully remove the seat from the car.
-
If needed, turn the seat over on a protected surface and determine how the seat fabric is attached to the frame. Tools are available through larger auto parts stores for upholstery removal and replacement. (If the seat is powered, the motor will be located in the lower half of the seat.)
