Parts Resources

car maintenance and repairFirst, let’s take a closer look at finding parts. The temptation for the new do-it-yourselfer is to buy for price. And it makes sense to shop price if you’re buying a new engine or hiring a mechanic to do the hard jobs. But the difference between the price of name-brand oil at a discount store and that at a quality auto parts store is little; probably less than 50 cents a quart.

Hey, money is money. So why do I recommend that you get your oil from a real auto parts store rather than from a discount we-have-everything store? Because you need friends! And 50 cents a quart is cheap for friendship. The big-store clerk, if found, may be able to help you find the oil—or not—but probably can’t offer any valuable help on selecting it or other parts. On the other hand, the typical auto parts clerk has experience or at least some training in what is sold. They’re also easier to find. Don’t be shy. Use the magic words, “Can you help me, please?” and you will be amazed at how much value you can get for 50 cents a quart.

Okay, you’ve bought a few quarts of oil and maybe a filter. You’ve also talked with a real, live car person who may be able to help you with future questions and purchases. You’ve also spent some time wandering around the store to see what’s what. Or you’ve found a store and clerk that you can scratch off your list as helpful.

Where to start in your quest for a dependable auto parts resource? If your car is less than about 5 years old, consider starting at the local dealer’s parts department. Buy some oil and filter and ask for some advice for your first oil change. Because you are looking for dependable help as much as a product, the way the parts clerk treats you is important.

For older cars or if you’re not near a dealer, try some of the larger auto parts chains in your area. A quart of oil purchased at each one will tell you lots about whom you should trust for future purchases.

Remember to write down preferred and to-be-avoided stores and clerks in your Car Journal for future reference. Also scribble down any useful advice offered.
