Brake Basics

car maintenance and repairNow that your car is moving forward you’ll eventually want to make it stop. The brake system does this job. Brake system components include a hydraulic master and wheel cylinders that transform pressure on the car’s brake pedal to move brake parts at each wheel. On disc brakes, small brake pads are forced against a round disc rotating at the end of the axle. On drum brakes, two brake shoes are forced against the inside surface of a brake drum. The friction slows the wheel’s rotation and, thus, slows the car.

Obviously, brakes are important. So is brake maintenance. You don’t want the cylinders to fail. Nor do you want the brake surfaces to be damaged or wear down too low. Fortunately, this book will show you how to take good care of your brakes so they will take good care of you.
