Instrument Basics

With all this automotive technology at your beck and call, it’s good to know what’s going on. That’s where the gauges and controls come in. They continually report how fast you’re traveling, how much fuel is in the tank, how well the alternator is recharging the battery, how warm the engine is, and dozens of other important facts. Based on this data you can decide whether to slow down when you see a police car, stop for gas (and a burger) or coolant (and fries), or figure out how far you are from your destination.

Sometimes, however, gauges don’t work. That’s when your troubleshooting skills will come in handy. If you don’t have them yet, keep reading. In fact, in this book you’ll learn how to read and decipher your car’s powerful trouble-analysis system and save yourself countless hours of head-scratching.
