Rebuilding Parts

car maintenance and repairYou have choices. The alternator that went bad can be rebuilt or replaced with a new one. Also, you can rebuild yours or you can buy one that is professionally rebuilt. The same goes for an engine that’s gone bad—or about too. You can buy a new one, a professionally rebuilt unit, or rebuild it yourself.

Having said that, I’ll say this: Don’t try rebuilding your own components until you have the experience and tools to do so. And most of these components require specialized tools and knowledge to do the job right. You don’t want to trade one bad part for another one.

In most cases, you don’t have someone rebuild your car’s part for you, you exchange yours for one that has been rebuilt. So make sure the rebuilt part is an exact replacement rebuilt with quality parts and labor. You don’t want to try installing a new part that you find out almost fits. Nor do you want to save ten bucks on the part and have to buy a better-quality replacement next month. Many consumers who buy replacement parts do so from rebuilders certified by the original equipment’s manufacturer.

Tech Tip

Why consider buying a rebuilt part over a new one? Price! Parts rebuilders can make a part as good as new for less than the cost of a new one. In addition, their equipment and experience means they can rebuild a component better than you can. However, as with all things you buy, make sure you’re buying from qualified rebuilders – a trusted auto parts store knows who they are.
