Renting Tools

Here’s a smart option. Instead of buying a shop hoist (for lifting an engine out) or a transmission jack (for lowering the tranny out of the car), consider renting one. You typically can rent a specialized tool from a rental store or larger auto parts store for about 10%-per-day. That is, a $600 hoist (new price) can be rented for around $60 a day. Prices vary greatly.

What can you rent? Just about anything. In fact, if you don’t plan to do many of your own repairs but need a set of basic automotive tools once in awhile, consider renting them. You’ll get professional tools at a lower out-of-pocket expense. Expensive automotive tools you can rent cheap include:

  • Jacks to hoist one corner of a car

  • Jack stands to hold up two corners of a car

  • Hoists to lift a large component such as an engine

  • Pullers for removing pressed-on parts

  • Spreaders for spreading tie rods and ball joints

  • Separators for assembling bearings

  • Body and paint equipment

  • Car dolly or tow bar for moving a non-running car

  • Clutch alignment tool

  • Compression gauge for testing cylinder compression.
