Replacing Parts

car maintenance and repairParts can be anything from relatively easy or very difficult to replace. In most cases, the problem isn’t connecting or installing the part, it’s getting to it. Step-by-step illustrated instructions in this book will guide you for many common parts replacements. Beyond that, here are some useful tips:

  • Many wire connections simply pull apart; if they don’t come apart easily, look for a clip or button that can be pushed to release the connection.

  • Use 1-inch wide masking tape to mark any wires disconnected or extra parts removed so you know how they go back together.

  • A tight (non-electric) part that defies removal often can be loosened after a careful spraying with WD-40 or a similar penetrating lubricant product.

  • If in doubt, ask your auto parts clerk for tips on removing and replacing a specific part.

  • If you can’t find a part on your car, check the owner’s manual or service manual for drawings and photographs.

  • If you find the part that needs replacing but don’t feel comfortable tearing things out to get to it, consider getting professional help.
