Maintenance Basics

car maintenance and repairHow much of your car’s maintenance and repair can you do? The answer is: As much as you want. After reading further, you may decide to do your first oil change, or to perform the annual maintenance needs, or even to replace the car’s transmission. Your decision depends on what knowledge, skills, and tools you have. Reading this book will provide the knowledge. Putting it into practice will give you the skills. You’ll also learn what tools you need and how to use them. It’s up to you.

Many folks who have never performed car maintenance or repairs start with observation jobs such as checking the oil as covered in Gas Pump Maintenance. They work up to an oil change every three months. Then, if comfortable with it all, they move on to semi-annual and annual maintenance tasks. Or they tackle some of the jobs and leave others for a trusted service shop or mechanic. They may choose any job that can be done from under the hood, but none that require jacking up the car or climbing around underneath. Again, it’s really up to you.

All you’ll need is a schedule (owner’s manual), some instructions (this website and maybe a shop manual), some Parts and Tools, and the time. I’ll even tell you how much time it should take you to do the job. Men and women of all ages and backgrounds have successfully maintained and repaired their cars for more than 100 years.
